Spain’s Criminal Code distinguishes homicidio from asesinato. Article 139 lists circumstances including alevosía, payment or reward, deliberate additional suffering, and facilitating another offence or preventing its discovery. Classification requires examining the facts and applicable law. [1]

Our suggested reading starts with who uses the label. Is it the description of a police investigation, a prosecution allegation, or the finding in a judgment? Identifying the speaker helps distinguish a working hypothesis from a court decision.

In international reporting we will retain an original legal term when translation could mislead. We will not automatically treat every foreign reference to “murder” as a finding under Spain’s Article 139. The jurisdiction, procedural stage and source will accompany the story.
